Apple’s next-generation smartwatch may include major upgrades in connectivity, according to a new report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is expected to support satellite communication and come equipped with a more advanced 5G modem.
Gurman reports that Apple plans to use a new MediaTek modem in the upcoming high-end watch. This modem will bring 5G capability to the device for the first time. The modem is also said to support RedCap, a low-power version of 5G that is designed specifically for small devices like wearables.
Currently, cellular models of the Apple Watch still rely on an older Intel modem that only supports 4G LTE. iPhones, by contrast, have included 5G support since the iPhone 12 was released in 2020. If the change happens, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 would be the final Apple product to phase out Intel components. Apple is also expected to develop a custom version of its new C1 modem, which was introduced with the iPhone 16e, specifically for future wearables.
Satellite support is also reportedly coming to the new Apple Watch. This would allow users to send text messages even when they are outside the range of cellular and Wi-Fi networks. Apple first introduced this feature, called Emergency SOS via satellite, with the iPhone 14. The service expanded with iOS 18, allowing users to send regular texts through satellites in areas without coverage.
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is expected to offer the same level of satellite connectivity, making it a more reliable communication device in remote locations.
Gurman also mentions that Apple is exploring new features for the watch, including a camera powered by artificial intelligence. The camera is expected to be built directly into the watch rather than being attached as an accessory. This brings to mind the Wristcam, a watch band with a built-in camera released in 2021. However, Apple’s approach is likely to be more seamless and integrated.
If development stays on schedule, Apple is expected to launch the Apple Watch Ultra 3 in September. The new model will likely debut alongside the redesigned iPhone 17 lineup.
