Apple Faces Setbacks with Apple Watch SE and Blood Pressure Tech

Apple is reportedly struggling with the development of its next-generation Apple Watch SE, facing internal concerns over design and production costs. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the tech giant had considered switching from an aluminum casing to a plastic body for its budget-friendly smartwatch. However, difficulties with aesthetics and cost-effectiveness have raised doubts about the project’s future.

Gurman reports that Apple’s design team is unhappy with the appearance of the plastic-bodied Apple Watch SE. Meanwhile, the operations team found that producing the plastic case does not significantly cut costs compared to aluminum. Since the SE model is meant to be an affordable alternative to premium Apple Watches, the lack of savings undermines the purpose of using plastic. As a result, the project is now at serious risk, and Apple may even cancel it altogether.

The second-generation Apple Watch SE, launched in 2022, remains the most affordable Apple smartwatch while maintaining its premium aluminum build. The introduction of a plastic version was expected to make the watch more accessible to a wider audience. However, given the challenges, Apple may continue with its current design strategy.

In addition to the Apple Watch SE struggles, Apple is also experiencing issues with the blood pressure monitoring feature intended for its high-end smartwatches. This feature, expected to debut in the Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Apple Watch Series 11 in September 2025, is reportedly facing testing difficulties.

Although the exact problems remain unclear, they may involve accuracy, battery performance, or false readings. If these concerns persist, Apple may be forced to delay the feature’s release.

Despite these challenges, Apple continues to enhance the connectivity of its upcoming Apple Watch Ultra 3. The smartwatch is expected to support satellite texting and Reduced Capacity 5G (5G RedCap), improving standalone communication. These features could be particularly useful for users in remote areas who rely on stable connections.

Apple’s smartwatch business is also experiencing a downturn. Reports indicate a drop in Apple Watch shipments in 2024, contributing to the first recorded contraction in the global smartwatch market. As competition intensifies and demand shifts, Apple faces increasing pressure to innovate while managing production costs and technological hurdles.
