Patek Philippe holds an imperial-like status in the watch industry, and the brand’s creations are all-encompassing. From complex watches to dress watches and even sports watches, they have highly sought-after masterpieces. Here, we refer to the Nautilus collection, which has been dominating the high-end market in recent years.
The Nautilus series was developed by the design master Gérald Genta for PP in 1976. Inspired by ship portholes, the watch’s appearance, especially the bezel, gives a strong sense of familiarity at first glance. A few years before creating this piece, Gérald Genta had designed the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet. Thus, creating a similar stainless steel luxury sports watch was well within his expertise. Similar to the Royal Oak, their development paths also share similarities. From initially challenging market acceptance to establishing their own high-end sports watch lines, after more than 40 years of evolution, the Nautilus series has now become one of Patek Philippe’s most famous and popular works. Especially in modern times, the brand has continuously added more advanced functional models to the series, greatly expanding its range and allowing collectors to fulfill numerous desires within this single series.
The Nautilus 5711/1A-014, produced for only one year, features a rare green dial. When it was first launched, the watch was priced at over one million Taiwan dollars, and its secondary market price remains high.
In recent years, the headline of this series is not the addition of super new models but the discontinuation of the basic and popular model 5711/1A-010 (blue dial). Remember that when the brand officially confirmed the discontinuation of 5711/1A-010 in 2021, it caused a huge stir. Concurrently, the final editions released by the brand in the same year, including 5711/1A-014 (green dial) and the highly sought-after 5711/1A-018 (TIFFANY blue dial), commanded unimaginably astonishing market prices upon their launches. Even now, the secondary market prices of these two models are still considerable. After the discontinuation of 5711/1A, the Nautilus series seems to have entered a new era. In 2022, Patek Philippe created the 5811/1G, which resembles the 5711/1A in appearance but features a white gold case to fill the gap. Currently, among the popular men’s watches in the Nautilus series made of white gold or stainless steel, there are at least the following models. Looking at them one by one, you will find that their original pricing is already very high, and the brand slightly increased the product prices from September 2024. Therefore, the pricing of each watch has increased compared to last year.
In 2024, the Nautilus series discontinued the old model 5980 while adding the new 5980/60G in white gold. The watch is equipped with a denim-textured blue-gray calfskin strap, exuding vitality.
- 5811/1G-001 White gold three-hand watch – NT$ 2,339,000
- 5712/1A-001 Stainless steel moon phase watch – NT$ 1,679,000
- 5726/1A-014 Stainless steel annual calendar moon phase watch – NT$ 1,843,000
- 5990/1A-011 Stainless steel dual time zone chronograph watch – NT$ 2,255,000
- 5740/1G-001 White gold perpetual calendar watch – NT$ 5,071,000
The 5811/1G is priced at NT$ 2,339,000, and the current average secondary market price is approximately NT$ 4.6 million.
From the brand’s pricing of the above models, it can be seen that the Nautilus series is indeed like the nobility in the field of sports watches. Even the stainless steel models have some advanced functions. In fact, similar models produced by some entry-level and mid-range brands can be obtained for tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, or several hundred thousand at most. Compared to the Nautilus’ starting price of over one million, it highlights the series’ star status and excellent craftsmanship. However, in the secondary market, the desire of high-end collectors to own this series is more persistent than we imagine, as evidenced by the market prices of each watch. The Nautilus series followed the general market trend in the past two years, and the secondary market prices have dropped from their peak. The longer the time passes, the more the prices decline.
The 5712/1A is priced at NT$ 1,679,000, and the current average secondary market price is approximately NT$ 3.05 million.
According to the data from the advanced watch market research institution WatchCharts, in July 2024, the price of the 5811/1G was still 4.65 million), which was the performance after the watch’s price had fallen for more than two years. The prices of other models during the same period were as follows: 5712/1A: 3.063 million), 5726/1A: 3.2 million), 5990/1A: 4.114 million), and 5740/1G: 6.784 million). Each model is in an overpriced state, and the premium rates are not just a little.
The 5726/1A is priced at NT$ 1,843,000, and the current average secondary market price is approximately NT$ 3.303 million.
By January 2025, approximately half a year after the aforementioned observation period, based on the market data found on the WatchCharts website, among the five watches, the number of models that have increased and decreased in price is approximately equal. In terms of price growth, the most outstanding performance recently belongs to the 5726/1A-014. Originally, from October to December 2024, its price remained relatively stable at around $98,000. However, since 2025, its momentum has been extremely strong, and the current secondary market price has soared to $100,787 (approximately NT$3.303 million), silently setting a new high in the past half a year. Additionally, the 5990/1A-011 has shown a low-open and high-close trend in the recent month. At the beginning of January, it fell below$122,000, but after three weeks, it has rebounded to the latest quoted price of approximately 4.028 million). Among the models with a declining price, the 5712/1A-001 and 5740/1G-001 have experienced relatively significant drops recently. The current quoted price of the former has shrunk to 3.05 million), and the latter is 6.623 million), both falling to the low point within the first month of this year. For the 5811/1G-001, there has also been a slight increase recently, with the current quoted price at 4.6 million). Compared to half a year ago, the market prices of four of these five models have slightly decreased (only the 5726/1A has skyrocketed beyond the price half a year ago).
The 5990/1A is priced at NT$ 2,255,000, and the current average secondary market price is approximately NT$ 4.028 million.
However, the Nautilus truly deserves its status as a superstar in high-end sports watches. Perhaps its price was hyped to a peak before. After more than three years of continuous decline, their premium rates are still astonishingly high. Currently, among the five models, the highest premium rate is the three-hand model 5811/1G (94.2%), followed closely by 5712/1A (79.4%), and then in sequence are 5726/1A (77%), 5990/1A (76.4%), and 5740/1G (29%). At first glance, the premium rate of 5740/1G seems less intimidating, but don’t forget that it is originally a complex functional model in precious metal with a pricing more than twice that of the other models. Therefore, the space for price speculation is inherently more limited. The current premium rate of nearly 30% attests to its popularity. It’s truly not easy to acquire a PP Nautilus these days. No wonder the brand is confident even after discontinuing the 5711/1A, as they still have many equally excellent works waiting for collectors to spend a lot of time or a huge sum of money to bring these exquisite watches home.
The 5740/1G is priced at NT$ 5,071,000, and the current average secondary market price is approximately NT$ 6.623 million.
