Rolex’s iconic Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona, one of the most coveted chronographs in the world, marks its 60th anniversary with a striking new iteration: the Reference 126506. Unveiled at Watches and Wonders Geneva earlier this year, this latest release stands out for its ice blue dial and a groundbreaking exhibition caseback that reveals the all-new Calibre 4131. Despite fierce competition from other colourful models in the 2023 collection, the Daytona remains the focal point of Rolex’s celebrations.
This new version of the Daytona, particularly the platinum model, is reminiscent of the brand’s 2013 platinum edition. The new caseback design offers a clear view of the updated movement, a first for the collection. The Calibre 4131 introduces Rolex’s Chronergy escapement, alongside other subtle mechanical enhancements, although official specifications remain consistent with previous models. Despite these updates, the design maintains the classic features that have long defined the Daytona, without any major changes such as the addition of a date function.
While the published dimensions of the watch remain 40mm, the Daytona Reference 126506 feels slightly larger and more spacious than its predecessor. This is particularly noticeable in the slimmer subdial tracks and a more refined case profile, though Rolex does not specify any changes in case thickness. These visual and tactile adjustments are most apparent to those familiar with previous Daytona models, enhancing the overall wearer experience for seasoned collectors.
For those new to the Daytona, these refinements may not be immediately noticeable. However, the overall design is more streamlined, with uniform changes across the collection, such as symmetrical lugs on all models. The bezel, another notable feature, has also undergone a redesign. It now matches the material of the case and is entirely crafted from Cerachrom, Rolex’s proprietary ceramic. In models with precious metal bezels, however, this change is not applicable.
The 60th anniversary edition of the Cosmograph Daytona, with its innovative mechanical updates and subtle design evolutions, ensures that this legendary chronograph continues to captivate the attention of collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
