Rolex has unveiled a striking new version of its iconic Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona to commemorate the watch’s 60th anniversary. The new reference 126506, revealed at Watches and Wonders Geneva earlier this year, has caught the attention of watch enthusiasts, particularly for its elegant ice blue dial and a groundbreaking exhibition caseback that offers a glimpse of the innovative new Caliber 4131.
The Daytona, widely regarded as one of the most important chronographs in horological history, has continued to evolve over the years, and the 2023 model is no exception. The new Caliber 4131 features Rolex’s advanced Chronergy escapement and improvements to the self-winding system, though the official specifications remain consistent with its predecessor. Notably, this is the first time in Daytona’s history that Rolex has incorporated an exhibition caseback, a move that allows wearers to appreciate the inner workings of the movement.
Despite retaining the familiar 40mm case size, the new Daytona feels notably larger. This subtle shift in proportions is attributed to a slightly slimmer case profile and slimmer subdial tracks, which contribute to a more contemporary aesthetic. However, these changes may only be perceptible to those familiar with previous Daytona models, as the specifications do not reflect any major alterations in dimensions.
In addition to the case and dial updates, the 2023 Daytona introduces a new bezel ring, which is now crafted from the same material as the case. This update is consistent across the five current model references, although models featuring precious metal bezels will retain their traditional design. The bezel is made entirely of Cerachrom, a material known for its durability, and is now framed for added protection, though the exact reasons behind this modification remain speculative.
While the Daytona’s 60th anniversary edition has garnered significant attention, it is not the only model in Rolex’s latest collection to stir conversation. Enthusiasts have also been captivated by the release of several colorful variants of the Daytona, each adding a unique touch to the collection. Nonetheless, the Platinum 126506 model, with its signature ice blue dial, remains the standout of the 2023 lineup, continuing Rolex’s legacy of creating timeless and innovative timepieces.
