The wellness app Welltory has rolled out a new sleep analysis feature, offering users a science-based approach to understanding and improving their sleep patterns. Initially available exclusively to Apple Watch users, the feature is designed to deliver actionable insights by leveraging heart rate data, movement tracking, and personalized algorithms.
Addressing Wearable Limitations
Welltory’s CEO and founder, Jane Smorodnikova, highlighted the challenges of accurately monitoring sleep with wearable devices. “Polysomnography (PSG) remains the gold standard for sleep analysis, but it’s impractical for everyday use,” Smorodnikova explained. “Our research found that many wearables struggle to reliably track sleep stages, so we developed an algorithm that delves into Apple Watch data to reveal what happens in your body during sleep.”
The core of this new feature is Welltory’s proprietary “Sleep Wave,” a metric that tracks heart rate patterns to evaluate nightly recovery. By comparing these patterns to individual baselines and optimal heart rate ranges, users can gain a clearer picture of their sleep quality.
Visualizing Sleep and Recovery
Through a visually intuitive interface, the app enables users to observe their heartbeat’s waveforms, highlighting periods of stress release that promote deeper rest. It also identifies patterns behind sudden nighttime awakenings and reveals how daily activities and stress levels impact sleep.
“While it doesn’t replicate the precision of a sleep lab, it offers unprecedented depth for a wearable app,” said Smorodnikova. “We continue to refine the algorithm to enhance its accuracy over time.”
A Growing Market for Sleep Wellness
Welltory’s move underscores the growing focus on sleep health within the wellness industry. Companies like Eight Sleep, with its high-tech mattresses, and SleepScore Labs, which recently launched an AI-driven platform for optimizing sleep performance, are also catering to this rising demand.
Welltory’s sleep analysis feature aims to bridge the gap between wearable data and practical sleep insights, providing users with tools to better understand and improve their rest. Plans to expand the feature to additional devices are already in motion.
