“The Golden Hour” marks the latest offering from London-based Mr. Jones Watch, featuring a dial designed by artist Andy Wilx. This watch is part of a series that includes previous models like the 2022 version of The Golden Hour and The Silent Thief, which showcased a bird instead of a bee as its focal point. Both watches draw inspiration from English garden culture, incorporating intricate natural designs and geometric patterns that also function to display time.
This new iteration of The Golden Hour boasts artistic upgrades and is offered as a non-limited edition, despite a slight price increase. It maintains excellent value with reliable Swiss-made automatic movements. Unlike The Silent Thief’s polished steel case, this model features a black PVD-coated steel case, retaining the same 45mm size and 50-meter water resistance, protected by a flat sapphire crystal.
Time is read through two rotating discs; the hour disc resembles a compass, with a red arrow indicating the current hour, while the minute disc, adorned with floral prints, is marked by a red flower. Although the dial prioritizes artistry over traditional legibility, it successfully blends aesthetics with functionality.
Wilx’s design for The Golden Hour includes a striking bee at its center, enhanced by real gold leaf detailing. This version replaces the original minute marker crown with a flower, making it distinct yet true to its predecessor. The in-house crafted dials reflect Mr. Jones Watches’ commitment to artisanal quality.
The latest model has upgraded from a Swiss STP movement to the more robust Sellita SW200, known for its reliability and a power reserve of about two days. The new casebacks are designed with text printed on sapphire crystal, offering a glimpse of the gold-accented movement.
Visually, the 2024 Golden Hour impresses with its black and gold color scheme. The included black leather strap features matching gold stitching, enhancing the overall aesthetic. However, enthusiasts might consider pairing it with a more colorful or textured strap for added flair, as the watch accommodates 22mm straps with quick-release spring bars.
Despite a price increase—from £495 to £695 since the last model—Mr. Jones Watches continues to deliver unique designs that stand apart in the market. The 2024 non-limited edition of The Golden Hour retails for £695, offering an appealing blend of artistry and craftsmanship for under $1,000.
