At its recent Glowtime event, Apple not only introduced the iPhone 16 series but also launched a new Apple Watch and a range of software updates, including the highly anticipated Tides app, which will be available on the Apple Watch Series 10 and other models eligible for watchOS 11.
Designed for swimmers, surfers, and water sports enthusiasts, the Tides app promises to enhance safety and planning by offering real-time tidal information. Here’s a closer look at what the new app offers and which Apple devices will support it.
What Does the Tides App Do?
The Tides app is aimed at helping users safely navigate open-water activities by providing essential data on changing water conditions. The app offers seven days of tidal forecasts, covering coastlines and surf spots worldwide. This includes information on high and low tide times, rising and falling tides, tide height, and direction, as well as sunrise and sunset times.
Users can easily check tidal data for their favorite spots or nearby beaches, all displayed on an intuitive timeline. The app even allows for quick access to maps, showing nearby beaches at a glance.
Devices Supporting the Tides App
The Tides app will come pre-installed on the Apple Watch Series 10 and the new Satin Black edition of the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Additionally, it will be available with the watchOS 11 update, which rolls out on September 16th. The app will be compatible with the following devices:
- Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
- Apple Watch Series 6
- Apple Watch Series 7
- Apple Watch Series 8
- Apple Watch Series 9
- Apple Watch Ultra
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
How to Download the Tides App
For those with an eligible Apple Watch, the Tides app will automatically install with the watchOS 11 update. If it doesn’t appear in your App Library, it can be downloaded manually from the App Store. Make sure your Apple Watch is running the latest firmware to access the app.
Can the Apple Watch Handle Open-Water Activities?
Most modern Apple Watches are built to withstand open-water activities, though water-resistance levels vary. The Apple Watch Ultra series, with a water resistance rating of 100 meters, is EN13319-compliant, meaning it can handle submersion up to 40 meters, making it suitable for scuba diving.
For the rest of the lineup, including the Apple Watch Series 2 and later, the devices carry a water resistance rating of 50 meters. While suitable for most water-based activities, they aren’t designed for deep-sea diving.
In summary, the Tides app is set to be a valuable tool for water enthusiasts, offering real-time data to enhance safety and enjoyment of open-water activities. With its availability on a range of Apple Watches, users will soon have access to this powerful app at their fingertips.
