Apple Watch X Likely to Debut This Year for a Significant Reason

by Barbara Wilson

The highly anticipated Apple Watch Series 10 is expected to launch later this year, but it might arrive with a new name: “Apple Watch X.” This mirrors Apple’s approach in 2017 with the iPhone X, which marked a major shift in the iPhone lineup. The Apple Watch X is rumored to be a substantial upgrade over the current top model, the Apple Watch Series 9.

One key reason bolsters the likelihood of the Apple Watch X’s release this year: the timing of Apple’s next event. The upcoming September event, intriguingly dubbed “It’s Glowtime,” is scheduled for September 9. This date is significant as it marks the tenth anniversary of the Apple Watch’s first unveiling during the iPhone 6 event on September 9, 2014.

The iPhone X, introduced on the tenth anniversary of the iPhone, represented a major leap from the iPhone 8. Similarly, Apple may choose to commemorate the Apple Watch’s tenth anniversary with the launch of a special edition model, possibly the Apple Watch X. This raises questions about how Apple will name its new watches. Will we see both an Apple Watch Series 10 and an Apple Watch X? Could the X edition replace the expected Apple Watch Ultra 3? The lineup for this year could include the Apple Watch X, a potential Apple Watch Series 10, and perhaps a third-generation SE model.

What to Expect from Apple Watch X

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple designers are currently working on a thinner watch case and are considering a significant redesign of the watch bands. The new design may feature a magnetic attachment system, allowing more space within the watch for potentially larger components. This change could be one of the key updates in the Apple Watch X.

Gurman also reported that the Apple Watch X might come with larger displays, aligning it with the rumored Apple Watch Ultra 3. There is speculation that the new lineup could include a revamped SiP (System in Package), which might be the foundation for future AI capabilities, possibly incorporating new Apple Intelligence features.

Additionally, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested in June that the Apple Watch X will increase in size from the current 45/41mm options to approximately 49/45mm, adopting the larger form factor seen in the Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2. Moreover, an April report indicated that the Apple Watch X could feature LTPO technology across its entire display, further extending battery life.

With these potential advancements and the symbolic timing of its release, the Apple Watch X is shaping up to be a landmark edition in Apple’s smartwatch lineup, much like the iPhone X was for the iPhone.
