Hong Kong — A 57-year-old man was detained on Sunday in connection with the theft of a Rolex watch valued at HK$330,000 (approximately US$42,000) and cash from a fellow passenger on a HK Express flight.
The incident unfolded when a 39-year-old passenger reported the loss of his bank card, Rolex watch, and cash after his arrival at Hong Kong International Airport. According to the South China Morning Post, the victim had secured his belongings in a handbag and stored it in an overhead compartment on the flight from Da Nang to Hong Kong.
Upon reaching Hong Kong, the passenger discovered that his valuables were missing. Airport authorities were immediately notified and the incident was reported to the police. At this time, passengers had already disembarked and were boarding a bus on the tarmac.
Authorities quickly responded and conducted a search, eventually locating the stolen items concealed under a mat on the bus’s luggage rack. Several witnesses identified the suspect, who had been seen covering the stolen goods with a felt material before removing them, according to Hong Kong’s Headline Daily.
The suspect, identified as a Chinese passport holder, was arrested on charges of theft. The investigation is ongoing as police work to piece together the details of the case.
