LG is reportedly seeking compensation from Apple after the tech giant abruptly cancelled a project to incorporate microLED technology into the Apple Watch Ultra. MicroLED is considered a superior screen technology compared to OLED, offering brighter displays, more accurate colors, lower power consumption, and a reduced risk of screen burn-in. However, despite its advantages, Apple decided to halt the microLED initiative for the Apple Watch due to the high development and manufacturing costs.
Initially, Apple had planned to introduce microLED screens with the new Apple Watch Ultra, placing significant orders with LG for this purpose. LG had already made substantial investments in preparation for the project, including hiring new personnel, relocating factory machinery, and spending hundreds of billions of Won. These preparations were made based on discussions with Apple, even though no official contract had been signed between the two companies.
According to a report from The Elec, LG is now demanding compensation for the costs incurred during the preparation phase. Despite the absence of a formal agreement, LG argues that the scale of their preparations justifies their claim for reimbursement. Apple has yet to respond to these demands, leaving the situation unresolved.
As a result of the project’s cancellation, the introduction of microLED screens in Apple products appears to be delayed. Apple has reportedly decided to focus on implementing microLED technology in its iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks in the future, leaving the Apple Watch to continue using OLED screens for now.
