In the wake of recent high-profile Rolex robberies in Boldmere and the Jewellery Quarter, Jordan Beer, owner of Watches of Henley Street, has pointed to a more pressing issue affecting his clientele. Despite the spotlight on watch thefts, Beer insists that car thefts pose an even greater concern.
Beer, whose shop has seen increased business despite the surge in Rolex-related crimes, revealed that the theft of luxury vehicles, particularly Range Rovers, is a significant problem. He noted that clients frequently report their high-end cars being stolen from their driveways. “Around once a month, one of our customers will come in to tell us their Range Rover has been stolen,” Beer said. “People are parking their cars at night and waking up to find them gone. This is a bigger issue than watch thefts.”
His comments come amid a surge in Rolex robberies, with 130 such incidents reported in Birmingham since 2022. Beer emphasized that while insurance for watches remains straightforward, the situation for cars is more troubling. “Range Rovers are difficult to insure now, whereas insuring a watch is still relatively easy,” he said.
Beer advised watch owners to be cautious and vigilant, especially in public spaces. He urged clients to keep their watches secured and to be mindful of their surroundings. Despite the risks, he noted that his customers remain enthusiastic about investing in luxury timepieces, often spending significant amounts on brands like Rolex.
Reflecting on the changing landscape of crime, Beer observed that vigilance and awareness are more crucial than ever. “It’s no longer a given that you won’t be a victim of crime,” he warned. “You have to be aware of your environment and consider whether wearing an expensive watch is worth the risk.”
As the city grapples with rising crime rates, Beer’s insights highlight the broader context of security concerns affecting luxury item owners in Birmingham.
