Granada, Spain — Guardia Civil has dismantled a notorious gang responsible for stealing luxury watches and jewelry from wealthy tourists along the Costa del Sol. The criminal group, known for their extensive criminal records, has been apprehended following a thorough investigation spurred by numerous reports of stolen watches.
Targeting Tourists
The gang operated with a keen eye for high-end accessories, specifically focusing on patrons seated at restaurant terraces. Their modus operandi involved a female gang member who would identify potential victims based on their attire or the cars they drove. She would then approach, feigning affection by hugging or holding their arm, and swiftly make off with their watch or wallet. An accomplice, always a man, would wait nearby in a getaway car to ensure a quick escape.
Persistent Pursuit
Tracking the gang proved challenging due to their constant movement along the Costa del Sol. However, persistent efforts by the Guardia Civil led to the discovery of several gang members hiding in a house in a town near Granada. This location served as their base of operations from which they launched their daily criminal activities along the Malaga coast.
Arrests and Seizures
The operation culminated in the arrest of five Romanian nationals, linked to nine robberies in the Costa del Sol towns of Mijas and Marbella. In addition to the arrests, officers seized 2,300 euros in cash. One of the detainees was already wanted for similar crimes in Alicante.
This successful crackdown highlights the Guardia Civil’s dedication to combating organized crime and protecting tourists from sophisticated theft operations.
