Apple’s latest update with watchOS 10 introduces a significant enhancement for families: the ability to set up an Apple Watch to function similarly to an iPhone for family members who do not own an iPhone. This feature is available for Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch Series 4 and later models, making it easier to extend the benefits of the Apple Watch to children and other family members who lack an iPhone.
Key Features and Benefits
With this update, an Apple Watch can be configured through a parent’s iPhone, enabling communication, health, fitness, and safety features for users without an iPhone. This setup allows children to make phone calls, send messages, and use custom Memoji to connect with family and friends. Parents have the ability to approve all contacts to ensure a secure communication environment.
Additional features accessible through this setup include Emergency SOS, Maps, Siri, Alarms, and access to the App Store. Parents can also track their child’s location and ensure that all personal data remains encrypted and secure.
Requirements
To set up an Apple Watch for a family member, you will need:
An Apple Watch Series 4 or later with cellular capabilities, or an Apple Watch SE with cellular capabilities, running watchOS 7 or later.
An iPhone 6s or later with iOS 14 or later for the initial setup.
Apple IDs for both yourself and the family member using the Apple Watch, with two-factor authentication enabled on your Apple ID.
A Family Sharing group that includes the person using the Apple Watch.
You must have the role of organizer or parent/guardian within Family Sharing to complete the setup.
