In a remarkable testament to both the durability of Apple Watch and the kindness of strangers, YouTuber Jared Brick was reunited with his lost device nearly two years after losing it in the ocean. The watch was discovered in perfect working order, thanks to Apple’s Find My feature and a considerate local resident.
In 2022, Jared Brick was vacationing with his family in the British Virgin Islands to celebrate his son’s 11th birthday. During their trip, they used Apple Watches to stay connected while scuba diving, exploring depths of over 100 feet. Despite the Apple Watch’s design for underwater use up to 50 meters (164 feet), Brick’s watch went missing on their last day while he was swimming at The Baths on Virgin Gorda.
Caught up in the moment, Brick didn’t immediately realize his watch was gone. When he noticed, he utilized the Find My feature on another Apple device to report it lost. The app pinpointed the watch’s location, but Brick, having left the area, believed it was lost forever.
Eighteen months later, in December 2023, Brick received an unexpected call from Jonathan, a local resident of Virgin Gorda. Jonathan had found the watch on the beach, charged it, and saw Brick’s contact information displayed. He promptly called Brick and sent a photo of the recovered device. Jonathan then mailed the watch back to Brick in Felton, California, close to Apple’s headquarters.
In April 2024, nearly 22 months after it went missing, Brick received the Apple Watch. Remarkably, it had survived its extended underwater sojourn and the long journey back. In a video, Brick shared the moment he opened the package to find the watch in working order.
Brick expressed his gratitude to Jonathan for his honesty and effort in returning the watch and praised Apple for its durable technology. “A big thank you to Jonathan in the Caribbean for finding it, contacting me, and shipping it back. And to Apple for making amazing technology that works,” Brick said.
