The MoonSwatch: A Game-Changing Omega and Swatch Collaboration

by Barbara Wilson

Few watches have captured the public’s attention like the MoonSwatch. Since its launch, the collaboration between Omega and Swatch has sparked a cultural revolution in the watch industry. With long lines, sold-out releases, and an overwhelming demand, the partnership has redefined what a collaboration between luxury and affordable brands can achieve.

Swatch, known for saving the Swiss watch industry during the quartz crisis of the 1980s, has always positioned itself as a fun, accessible brand. It never aimed to compete with high-end, mechanical watchmakers but instead focused on making watches that were playful and affordable. Yet, 40 years later, Swatch found itself at the center of a cultural phenomenon in collaboration with its high-end sibling, Omega.

When the MoonSwatch debuted in 2022, it merged Omega’s iconic Speedmaster design with Swatch’s more playful, budget-friendly approach. The result was a product that exceeded all expectations, sparking a global frenzy. Queues formed outside Swatch stores worldwide, driven not only by the heritage of the NASA-approved Speedmaster but also by the exclusivity of the in-store-only sales. In just eight months, over a million MoonSwatches were sold.

Nick Hayek Jr, CEO of Swatch Group, later revealed that the success of the MoonSwatch led to a 50% increase in sales of the actual Omega Speedmaster at Omega boutiques. The MoonSwatch, with its striking blend of affordability and luxury, was proving to be more than just a novelty.

The collaboration didn’t stop at retail success. In March 2023, special MoonSwatch releases were held in select cities, including London, Milan, Tokyo, and Zurich. A few months later, Omega and Swatch took their partnership to the charity world, with a 2024 auction hosted by Sotheby’s. The auction featured 11 exclusive MoonSwatch Moonshine Gold suitcases, each containing all 11 Moonshine Gold editions along with unique memorabilia. The collection raised CHF 534,670 (S$808,000) for Orbis International, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting avoidable blindness.

For those who still haven’t jumped on the MoonSwatch bandwagon, the latest release, the MoonSwatch 1965, could be the tipping point. This new model celebrates the 60th anniversary of NASA officially qualifying the Omega Speedmaster for manned space missions. The 1965 edition features a 42mm bioceramic case with the same design as its predecessors, but with a thoughtful nod to history. The chronograph counters at 10 and 2 o’clock display “19” and “65,” referencing the historic year when the Speedmaster was chosen over submissions from Wittnauer and Rolex.

The ongoing success of the MoonSwatch collaboration shows that luxury brands are increasingly turning to mass-market collaborations to remain relevant in today’s market. However, it’s not all about profit. The partnership between Omega and Swatch has brought a touch of luxury to the masses, making high-end horology accessible to a broader audience, while also bringing history and heritage to new, younger watch enthusiasts.
