Patek Philippe The Similarities and Differences between Nautilus 57111A-014 and Cubitus 58211A

by crystal-cq

Shortly after Patek Philippe launched its new creation, Cubitus, many people felt a sense of déjà vu when looking at the stainless steel model 5821/1A. This is because it resembles the 2021 limited edition green-dialed Golden Eagle Nautilus 5711/1A-014 like brothers. Apart from the shape, one being square and the other being similar to an octagon, other aspects such as the design of the case details, the polishing and decoration of external parts, the dial color and decoration, and even the functionality are all strikingly similar.

This feeling is not accidental because Thierry Stern, the president of Patek Philippe, also mentioned in an interview: “The Cubitus series can be regarded as the sibling of the Nautilus series.” It can be seen that there are indeed many common design elements between the two. Unfortunately, the Nautilus 5711/1A-014 went into history along with the discontinuation of the 5711 model and was not able to shine together with its “brother” in the current product line of PP. However, the reason why the two watches have a sense of succession might be that when they were originally created, there was an intention to make up for the regret of collectors who missed the chance to own the Nautilus 5711/1A-014 back then (of course, this is just my own imagination).

Some foreign watch bloggers were also attracted by the resemblance between the Nautilus 5711/1A-014 and the Cubitus 5821/1A. So they specially gathered these two watches for photography. When the two watches, which originally looked at pictures separately, were placed together for photography, the strong connection feeling became even more intense. However, it can also be clearly seen that the size of the Cubitus series is indeed the largest among Patek Philippe’s sporty and casual style works, and there is a subtle difference in the way it looks on the wrist compared to the green-dialed Golden Eagle.

One of the farewell models launched by Patek Philippe when it announced the discontinuation of the Nautilus 5711 model in 2021 was 5711/1A-014.

Placing the Nautilus 5711/1A-014 and the Cubitus 5821/1A together, it can be seen that their similarity is indeed not low. For example, the bezels, cases, and bracelets of both have undergone dual polishing and satin-finishing processes to create a visual sense of layering. And both cases have protruding shoulder guards on both sides. Although the shoulder guards of the Nautilus are curved and those of the Cubitus are relatively straight, the design similarity is quite high. Then for the dials, the combination of the olive green dial and the horizontal raised stripes is suitable for both the Nautilus and Cubitus series. Their hands, date window designs and positions are all the same. Except that most of the three-dimensional appliqué rectangular hour markers of the Cubitus series have been slightly changed to parallelograms, generally speaking, they are as if carved from the same mold. After all, even the internal 26-330 S C movement is the same, indicating that apart from the individualized appearance, the internal essence of both is the same.

Since the two works look so similar, everyone must be curious about their differences. It is definitely not as simple as one being octagonal and the other being square. Let’s directly review the internal and external specifications of the two watches to see what independent characteristics they present in terms of data specifications.

Cubitus 5821/1A

  • Case material: Stainless steel
  • Case structure: Two-piece
  • Bracelet: Stainless steel bracelet, folding clasp
  • Diameter: 45mm
  • Case thickness: 8.3mm
  • Caseback: Transparent
  • Water resistance: 30 meters
  • Movement: 26-330 S C automatic winding movement
  • Automatic rotor: 21K gold (with horizontal decoration similar to the dial)
  • Balance wheel frequency: 4Hz
  • Power reserve: 45 hours

Although both the Nautilus 5711/1A-014 and the Cubitus 5821/1A are equipped with the 26-330 S C movement, the decoration of their automatic rotors is slightly different.

After looking at the specifications of the two models, they still feel very similar, even the case thickness is the same. However, due to the larger diameter of the Cubitus, visually there is an illusion that it seems thinner. In addition, as the predecessor, the 5711/1A has a more outstanding performance in waterproofing. Considering that relatively few people would wear PP watches for more vigorous activities, the difference in waterproofing performance may not be so obvious in practice. Finally, another notable difference is that Patek Philippe has redesigned the details of the automatic rotor of the Cubitus series movement to echo the texture of the dial. Although it is only a small change, it also helps to show the differences between the Nautilus 5711/1A-014 and the Cubitus 5821/1A. The thoughtful design thinking of the “King of Watches” is manifested thoroughly in such small details.
