Omega’s New Speedmaster Pilot Watch: Paying Tribute to the Past and Pioneering the Future

by crystal-cq

Do you remember our previous report titled “Watch Enthusiasts Debate the Mysterious Omega Speedmaster Pilot Watch: Will It Be Available for Public Sale?” which mentioned that a watch crafted by OMEGA for US military pilots was conditionally made available for purchase from the outside world. At that time, some were curious about the possibility of a full-scale market release. Now, the answer has emerged. Omega has indeed fulfilled the wishes of those interested in this watch as they have unveiled a new model, the Speedmaster Pilot watch, which is the ultimate commercial version of the previously mysterious flight watch.

Omega introduces the Speedmaster Pilot watch to pay homage to its history of creating flight watches, and the design inspiration stems from the first Speedmaster from 1957.

Omega has had the experience of manufacturing watches for the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom and the Fleet Air Arm personnel since World War II. In 1957, the Speedmaster series, which was originally created for car racing, emerged. Surprisingly, its design was also suitable for the aviation field and later even became the designated watch for NASA’s space missions. By the late 1960s, OMEGA introduced the Flightmaster, a specialized watch tailored for pilots. Its distinctive features such as the prominent round case, the colorful and dense dials on the faceplate were quite characteristic, and it can be regarded as the culmination of Omega’s efforts in developing flight watches.

From the case, bezel to the dial, all emphasize the use of a matte finish to reduce the watch’s reflection and enable pilots to read the time clearly at a glance.

Fast-forward to modern times, the Speedmaster Pilot watch inherits the spirit of Omega’s previous flight watches and makes a fresh start. Its design blueprint is said to be the first Speedmaster from 1957, thus the appearance gives a sense of déjà vu. The watch has a diameter of 40.85mm. Its case and bracelet are both made of stainless steel and have undergone a matte treatment on the surface. The intention is to prevent the watch from affecting the pilot’s vision due to reflection from the case when worn during flight. The black aluminum bezel, which has also undergone a matte treatment, has a similar design to the Speedmaster watch. Both feature a tachymeter scale, and the classic feature like the “dot above 90” has been deliberately retained, skillfully connecting the two generations of watches.

The matte black dial of the Speedmaster Pilot watch has a grainy texture and is surrounded by a silver minute and second scale ring. The hands and hour markers are entirely coated with a light green Super-LumiNova luminous coating, ensuring that reading the time in the dark is not affected at all. In addition, the elements on the watch dial clearly have the charm of a flight watch. For instance, the tip of the central chronograph seconds hand is designed like an aircraft tail wing and is coated with a striking orange color. The 60-minute and 12-hour coaxial chronograph dials at 3 o’clock have orange hands and white scales, and the design gives off the concept of a fuel consumption indicator in the aircraft cockpit. As for the small seconds dial at 9 o’clock, it features a blue pseudo-horizon pattern inspired by the cockpit sight and is accompanied by a yellow lacquered hand for clear reading.

The watch back is designed with a simple solid case back engraved with the characteristic seahorse pattern of the Speedmaster series. The 9900 coaxial escapement automatic movement inside offers a power reserve of 60 hours.

The watch back features the signature seahorse emblem pattern of the Speedmaster series on a solid case back. Below the pattern, the water resistance of the watch (100 meters) is engraved. Apart from that, there are only some simple polishing and decorative touches, without any redundant text or patterns. The watch is equipped with the 9900 movement inside. In addition to the complexity of the chronograph function, the movement has a frequency of 4Hz and a power reserve of 60 hours. Inevitably, this movement is also a certified Master Chronometer, indicating that its accuracy, stability, and anti-magnetism are superior to those of ordinary chronometer-certified movements, providing a reliable support for the practicality and convenience of the Speedmaster Pilot watch.
