Apple recently announced numerous new software and hardware products at the 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Among them, although there is no new Apple Watch model yet, a new generation of the operating system closely related to the watch’s operation, watchOS 10, has emerged. According to Apple, watchOS 10 is regarded as a milestone change in the history of the Apple Watch operating system.
It sounds like the brand has high expectations for watchOS 10. So, what’s so special about this new version? Simply put, Apple has redesigned the way the operating system quickly browses information. For example, watchOS 10 will have a new Smart Stack function. Wearers will see some real-time and convenient information automatically pop up in the lower half of the watch face. Like before going out in the morning, Smart Stack will show the weather forecast from the Weather App. The wearer can get the needed information and reminders without having to search manually.

For those who wear the Apple Watch to assist with fitness and health monitoring, watchOS 10 also provides a “Workout Display Screen”. If you are cycling or using a stationary bike today, this display allows you to connect to a power meter, speed sensor, and cadence sensor via Bluetooth, etc. Moreover, if cycling outdoors, the newly added “Compass Waypoints” and “Maps” functions in watchOS 10 are also very useful. The former will automatically generate two new waypoints to assist the wearer in getting immediate help in an emergency.

In addition, watchOS 10 also continues to play a role in health care. For example, Apple has added the “Sunlight Time” measurement function, aiming to record the wearer’s activities in the sunlight. This function has its scientific basis. As the International Myopia Institute recommends that children have at least 80 minutes of outdoor activities daily to reduce the probability of myopia, this function can help the wearer understand whether they have enough time in the sunlight each day.

Apart from these substantive functions, Apple has also added styling-related functions in watchOS 10 that can improve the wearer’s mood. For instance, watchOS 10 will add Palette and Snoopy watch faces. The former is a combination of three overlapping layers of different colors. These colors will change over time and won’t be monotonous and boring. As for the Snoopy watch face, it’s even more interesting. Apple presents the famous characters Snoopy and Woodstock from “Peanuts” on the watch face. And the patterns of these two comic characters are not fixed. They will produce some animation-like effects with the pointer, making reading time much more interesting.

It seems that watchOS 10 does have many exciting new designs. No wonder Apple is satisfied with the experience it will bring to wearers. However, the watchOS 10 presented at WWDC is more like a preview. Currently, only the Developer Beta version will be released first. As for the time when the brand provides the official version, it will be between September and October. At that time, Apple Watch users might as well download and update to see if watchOS 10 is really as satisfactory as rumored.
