Omega Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch: Pricing and Market Trends

by crystal-cq

OMEGA watches have always given the impression of offering good value for money. The brand’s mid-to-high priced products have the ability to satisfy consumers in terms of design, craftsmanship, functionality, and quality. This is also reflected in the retention value of Omega watches in the secondary market. Generally, the prices of the brand’s watches do not drop sharply after purchase. Of course, compared to the high premium rates of popular watches from other major brands, Omega may fall short. However, there are still some Omega models that have been highly favored by the market since their launch. Their market prices in the secondary market are generally higher than the average Omega watches, and they are the most sought-after bestsellers in the eyes of collectors. Among them, the Snoopy Moonwatch from the Speedmaster series is undoubtedly the most representative. This model has only had three editions so far, but each one has been highly popular, and the secondary market prices have greatly exceeded our expectations for the brand’s watches.

Omega’s first-generation Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch was launched in 2003. Initially, the brand’s motivation for creating this watch was to pay tribute to the crucial role the Speedmaster Moonwatch played in the safe return of the Apollo 13 mission, for which it received the “Silver Snoopy Award” from NASA. This watch was initially a one-time limited-edition commemorative watch. The brand limited the release to 5,441 pieces, which was almost like not being limited. The biggest difference between this watch and the regular Moonwatch was that the small seconds sub-dial on the dial featured the pattern of the Silver Snoopy Award. After that, there were no sequels to the Snoopy Moonwatch and it was once lost in the tide of history. It was not until 2015, on the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission, that Omega continued the previous creativity and launched the second-generation Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch. It was from this generation that the market’s interest in the Moonwatch associated with the Silver Snoopy Award increased significantly. Perhaps it was because the watch was relatively rare (the limited quantity of the second generation was further reduced to 1,970 pieces), and the Snoopy pattern on the dial added a touch of  uniqueness, causing the secondary market price of the watch to soar. This also led to an increase in the market price of the first generation, which had been out of print for a long time.

The design of the back of each generation of the Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch has new highlights, which is one of the keys to attracting people.

In 2020, on the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission, Omega seized the opportunity to release the third-generation Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch. Not only did it change the black and white color scheme of the previous two generations to a mainly blue tone, but the watch was also not limited in its release for the first time. However, the annual production quantity of Omega was still limited. Due to the high popularity of the watch and the demand exceeding the supply, since its launch, the difficulty of obtaining this watch has always been the highest among Omega watches. It has been 20 years since the debut of the Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch. During this period, Omega has conservatively released only three models and has not accelerated the development of new works due to the enthusiastic pursuit of the market. This has instead consolidated its retention effect and market charm. The original pricing of the successive Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatches is as follows. The pricing of the third generation has been increased several times since its launch, so its current pricing has multiplied several times compared to the second and even the first generation, becoming the highest-priced model among the three models of the series with the rising prices. The pricing of the three Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatches is as follows:

  • First-generation Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch 3578.51 – US$ 3,195 (Discontinued, limited to 5,441 pieces)
  • Second-generation Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch 311.32.42.30.04.003 – NT$ 215,500 (Discontinued, limited to 1,970 pieces)
  • Third-generation Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch 310.32.42.50.02.001 – NT$ 351,000

The Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch, which has been heating up the market popularity since the second generation, already had a higher secondary market price than most Omega watches. During the golden period of popular watches in the past two or three years, the price soared to an all-time high. However, even though the watch was highly sought-after, when it encountered the market slump of popular watches starting from the second quarter of 2022, its value inevitably began to shrink gradually from the peak.

The first-generation Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch was priced at US$ 3,195, and the current average secondary market price is approximately NT$ 478,000.

According to the data from the advanced watch market research institution WatchCharts, the market price of the Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch has been steadily falling for more than two years as of July 2024. At that time, the secondary market quotations of the 1st to 3rd generations were in sequence: US$ 15,539 (approximately NT$ 510,000), US$ 37,490 (approximately NT$ 1.23 million), and US$ 16,203 (approximately NT$ 530,000). It can be seen that the second-generation Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch is still the most beloved model in this series among collectors, and all three models are in the overpricing level, and the premium rates are considerable.

The second-generation Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch is priced at NT$ 215,500, and the current average secondary market price is approximately NT$ 1.07 million.

Some time passed to January 2025. The three generations of the Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch each had their own developments in the past half year. For example, the first generation was on a downward trend from July to early October 2024, but suddenly rebounded around the turn of October and November, and has been relatively stable since December. The second generation, which had a stable market price, experienced a rapid drop in value after the end of July. Within just two months, its value shrank significantly from over US$ 38,000 to less than US$ 35,000, and then continued to decline slowly to the present. The third generation reached its lowest point in 2024 in August and then slightly recovered. However, in the past two months, the market price has continued to decline more noticeably. Again, according to WatchCharts, the latest quotations of the 1st to 3rd generations are currently: US$ 14,585 (approximately NT$ 478,000), US$ 32,625 (approximately NT$ 1.07 million), and US$ 14,841 (approximately NT$ 487,000). The values of the three generations of the Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch have declined compared to half a year ago, but this does not mean that the difficulty of obtaining the Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch has changed significantly.

The third-generation Speedmaster Snoopy Moonwatch is priced at NT$ 351,000, and the current average secondary market price is approximately NT$ 487,000.

Because if you compare the latest secondary market prices of these watches with the original pricing, you will find that the premium rate of the first generation is 356.4%, and the premium rate of the second generation is 343.8%. In the past, the premium rate of the second generation was always higher than that of the first generation. However, after the significant price drop in the previous six months, the premium rate of the second generation has now been surpassed by the first generation! As for the third generation, due to the significantly increased pricing, the premium rate is relatively more modest at 40%. Objectively speaking, all are still far higher than the original pricing. Especially the second generation, which is the most popular, even though the secondary market has been continuously declining for nearly three years, the price is still very high, giving people a sense of being out of reach. But for collectors who purchased this watch when it was first launched, when it comes to the retention value of this watch now, they will surely smile uncontrollably.
