Two Rolex timepieces with significant historical and cinematic connections are poised to be auctioned in New York next month, offering collectors a chance to own pieces of both Hollywood and exploration history.
The first watch, a 1976 steel Rolex ‘Red’ Submariner (Ref. 1680), was worn by renowned underwater cinematographer Alfred Giddings during his dives to the Titanic wreck. Expected to fetch between $20,000 and $40,000, the watch is a testament to Giddings’ role in documenting some of the most iconic deep-sea explorations of the 20th century.
The second Rolex, a 1984 yellow gold Submariner (Ref. 1680/8), was worn by actor Bill Paxton in his portrayal of a treasure hunter in James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster Titanic. This timepiece, expected to sell for between $30,000 and $60,000, has its own connection to the film’s iconic production.
Both watches were featured in Cameron’s films, with Giddings having partnered with the director on several occasions, including the 1989 film The Abyss. The auction, hosted by Sotheby’s on December 6, will offer a rare opportunity to acquire these items from an acclaimed cinematographer and a renowned actor’s personal collections.
In discussing his 1976 Submariner, Giddings, who worked on projects for National Geographic and the BBC, described the watch as “simply the best,” praising its unmatched performance in various underwater environments. From the Titanic wreck to deep-sea dives at the North Pole and Antarctica, the watch accompanied Giddings on some of the most challenging and historic explorations of the era.
With a storied career that includes filming For Your Eyes Only (1981) and Never Say Never Again (1983), Giddings’ connection to these iconic Rolex watches further elevates their appeal, blending history, cinema, and adventure in a single auction event.
