Apple’s Find My app has just received a valuable update that could make locating lost items even easier. With the release of iOS 18.2, currently in beta, Apple has introduced a feature that allows users to share the location of a lost item with a third party, expanding the app’s functionality beyond personal contacts.
Previously, users could only share their item’s location with people saved in their contacts, such as family and friends. With this new addition, iPhone owners can now send a location link to anyone—a trusted individual like an airline staff member or an acquaintance—who isn’t necessarily on their contact list. This makes it more convenient when dealing with a lost item in situations like traveling or public spaces.
To use the new feature, simply open the Find My app, select the lost item you want to share, and choose the “Share Item Location” option. This will generate a link that can be shared with anyone, even if they don’t have an Apple device. The recipient will be able to access the link and view the real-time location of the item, along with your contact details, including your email and phone number, so they can get in touch if needed.
The link itself is designed with flexibility in mind, as it can be accessed on any device, not just Apple products. Additionally, the user can track how many people have viewed the shared link, providing further insight into the process. The link will automatically expire when the item is found or after a week, whichever comes first.
This feature, which will be publicly available in iOS 18.2 (expected to launch in early December), is an excellent improvement for anyone who has experienced the stress of losing an item and needing help from others. It promises to make the process of recovering lost belongings far more efficient and less stressful, especially when you’re dealing with someone outside your immediate circle.
With this update, Apple has significantly enhanced the utility of its Find My app, offering a more versatile way for users to recover lost items while streamlining the process of getting help.
