The world-renowned Oyster Perpetual Submariner, a pioneering dive watch from Rolex, is finally the subject of its own comprehensive history, authored by celebrated historian and watch expert Nick Foulkes. Remarkably, Oyster Perpetual Submariner – The Watch That Unlocked the Deep marks the first authorized book-length exploration of the legendary timepiece, renowned as the world’s first wristwatch water-resistant to 100 meters.
A Collaboration with Wallpaper* Magazine
Published in a bilingual edition (English and French) spanning 252 pages, the book is the result of a collaboration between Rolex and the design magazine Wallpaper. Released on September 16, this publication is the first in a planned series of Rolex-related works. More than just a technical chronicle, Foulkes’ narrative promises engaging stories, including those of pioneers who tested early Submariner prototypes in extreme conditions.
Foulkes expressed his gratitude to Rolex, stating, “As a historian with a lifelong passion for watches, I was thrilled to access the Rolex archives and to be entrusted with writing the first authorized account of timepieces that have shaped history.”
Exploring Rolex’s Legacy
In addition to exploring the technical evolution of the Submariner, the book highlights the contributions of Rolex Testimonees through the lens of the brand’s Perpetual Planet Initiative. This initiative supports environmental exploration and protection, aligning with Rolex’s ongoing dedication to sustainability.
